Celebrating the Expertise Behind Steering the Course 2026 Race Management

For Steering the Course 2026, we are proud to once again have experienced National Race Officers leading the Race Management Workshop, reinforcing the vital role that high-quality race management plays in the sport of sailing.
Good race management is fundamental to fair, safe, and enjoyable racing. Well-run events ensure equal opportunities on the racecourse, clear communication, efficient scheduling, and safety for sailors of all ages and abilities. Strong race officers not only apply the Racing Rules of Sailing consistently, but also adapt to changing conditions on the water—creating the framework that allows sailors to compete at their best.
For the first time, the workshop will take place on Saturday morning, followed immediately by a practical on-the-water session during a live event — the Steering the Course Regatta 2026 on 30 May 2026. This enhanced format bridges classroom learning and real-world application, giving participants first-hand experience in decision-making, course setting, starting procedures, and race control under true regatta conditions.
The workshop has been delivered for many years by Inge Strompf-Jepsen and Bonnie Cheng, whose dedication to race management education has influenced countless officials and events. Elberti Uiterwaal-Postma, who joined last year, is also a key part of this highly regarded race management team. Together, they are recognised for their professionalism at numerous national and international regattas, including the Hong Kong Match Racing Nationals at HHYC.
This post celebrates Inge, Bonnie, and Elberti, thanking them for their expertise, generosity, and continued support of Steering the Course.
The Race Management Workshop is open to sailors and non-sailors alike, including sailors’ parents, coaches, volunteers, and anyone interested in learning how races are run—from course design and safe starts to fleet management and delivering fair, enjoyable competition.
